A musician and traveller’s life can be tough too. One experience my dad never thought he would have was going to Abu Dhabi. Unlike others who have gone there to work for a long period of time, he only stayed there for a few weeks. He and his band mates had a stint there for some reason. When the plane arrived in Abu Dhabi, he saw the beautiful, colorful lights that lined their highways and streets. The houses, and buildings too were richly lighted with various colors. Most especially the palaces of the king and his princes were lighted all around — glowing like precious stones! He was still excited then.

It was November when he arrived in Abu Dhabi. The dry warm air met his face as he disembarked from the plane. In the airport, he noticed the big contrast of culture with ours. Young and old men dressed in long white robes with long mustache, beards, and sideburns. The strict deportment of the men in uniform was scarily obvious.

My first week there was the exciting but after his friends left and he decided to stay for awhile since he loved to explore places, he started missing home. He was the only Filipino in company of other backpackers and most of the people can only speak Arabic or Urdu. One or two spoke English, but in hard-to-understand broken, halting English. He tried to understand then by using signs.

He got very homesick and wanted to go back to his country as soon as possible. What with very hot climate, language barrier, culture shock, and overly spicy food, the life in the desert was too much to bear. Oven-hot sand dunes that stretched hundred of miles away — so wide, so barren and so lonely! Night and day heonly had marshall for a company. Nope not a person but his musical instrument. But his vagabond spirit led on as he wanted to discover and explore more. He was the trying to write a song and wanted to find inspiration to do it, which he succeeded in doing so.

Eventually he was able to adapt to their culture. I studied their language and learned it in a few weeks. Gradually, he learned to eat their spicy food and unleavened bread, and I started to like the taste of mutton. He had great memories before going home and he was glad because he did not want to remember one place in a gloomy mood.

I remember one Friday night when we went out of town. We went to my wife’s hometown in a nearby province. As usual, the whole family and relatives went together and boarded the same car. My cousin-in-law drove the car, and we were confident that we could reach our destination safely.

When we were a few kilometers away from our destination, suddenly, without any warning, the tire of the car burst. The tire was totally ripped off from the truck rim probably due to overheating while traveling at fast speed on the toll road. The car skidded to the pavement, and the naked truck rim was badly damaged as it scratched hardly on the concrete road. We were very lucky that nobody was hurt.

My brothers helped together to fix the wheel. Luckily, my cousin-in-law had a spare truck rim and tire. After a few minutes, we continued our trip and arrived safely at my wife’s hometown.

We can also prepare for road contingency like this. Aside from having spare tires, truck rims, and truck wheels readily available on our car, which is a very good practice, we can also get help from the road assistance experts through having roadside assistance plan because we can just call for help and they will come to do the fix wherever you may be. It can spare us a lot of problems and headaches during road mishaps.

There is a need for a much bigger space for us because there’s ten of us in the family, and we also need enough space for our stuff, the cargo locker is a big help. A big motorhome that gives you enough space to move freely is always the better choice.  I know you can take tents while on the road, but sometimes you still need to have a reliable mobile home, in cases where you don’t find a spot that’s safe and  good for camping.

It’s also wise to get a mechanical breakdown insurance because no matter where you go motorhome repairs are covered and you know your motorhome is well taken cared of. Often an insurance is much better than a warranty, but having both would be awesome.

For a big family like us who love to go on long trips, campings, etc, that lasts for a few days, this  Carthago M-Liner 2010 model motorhome would be perfect. It is pretty expensive though, but if I can afford it, I would definitely buy it.

But I wonder why I don’t see too many of them here in our new area, unlike in our old place before, aside from those that are being used for commercial purposes.
