The Spirit Of Christmas in our Hearts
As early as now, I can already feel the spirit of Christmas. Last night, out neighbors have already lighted their Christmas light, and some are starting to decorate their Christmas trees. The malls are also selling a lot of Christmas items such as Christmas balls, lights, trees of different sizes, wreaths, and the nativity scene which we call “belen” in our native language.
Some are already making fruitcakes, and people are starting to think of possible gift ideas for christmas. Parents buy toys to wrap for their kids, because toys don’t get ruined unlike food, and they will become more expensive when December comes, so to save themselves some money and time during the Christmas rush, people are doing early shopping. I am planning to do the same for my son and younger siblings. I guess people have already learned from their past experiences of doing last minute shopping and all the prices have gone really high.
I am also happy to see that people are still looking forward to celebrating Christmas and ending this year happy despite everything that happened just recently, even though the country is currently under the state of calamity. I guess this is because Christmas means hope and a new beginning. Seeing the gigantic Christmas tree at the city central park is a sign of hope for everyone. It has also become a symbol of giving, because they made it a drop-off point for those people who would like to share and donate anything to the flood victims. Me and my family have donated some of our clothes and grocery items, especially milk for the kids, to those families who were affected by the typhoon, and it is great to see how grateful they are even of the smallest help they could get right now. I salute those people who go out of their way just to help.
Abuela said, a gift doesn’t have to be too expensive, fancy looking, wrapped or tied with a ribbon — anything that comes from the heart is the best you can give. Upon hearing it, my son even decided to give away his baby bottles and placed some of his favorite toys and clothes into the relief box. I’m happy how he is learning to give from the heart at his young age.One of my dad’s distant relative, Uncle Fred and his family, lost all their belongings. We really feel sad for them, and we hope that they will recover from it soon. We already sent them our monetary help, however, dad said we should think of any early christmas gift ideas for him and his family. We cannot bring back what they have lost but at least ease the pain that they feel right now. I also know some of my college friends who are suffering from the same situation. How I wish I could help them all. If only I was capable enough to extend help to everyone.
It’s good to see how our fellow country men are supporting each other in this time of need. Rich or poor, everyone is united in one purpose — to help and give. Truly, the spirit of Christmas doesn’t have to be felt only during December 25. Everyday can be Christmas if people are willing to help, give and share their blessings to those who need them. I still wish everyone to have a merry christmas, and hopefully all families who have lost their homes and families will be able to start anew before Christmas comes, and they would still be able to eat Noche buena together.
Last year, I bought my wife a gift after I got my Christmas bonus, and the prices of all items are on its peek. Right now, I have some christmas gift ideas for her, that will not be as expensive yet she will treasure forever. As for my whole family, I just wish all of us to stay safe, have good health, for us to be happy together and to continue loving each other until we get old and celebrate more Christmas to come.
