Teaching Kids The Lesson Of Safety
One of the most essential things to teach our little ones is how to to keep himself safe at all times. Whether he is just playing around or doing other things, it is better to teach him to always stay safe and to follow what he can’t and cannot do. The earlier he becomes aware of danger and the possible results of his actions, the better.
But whatever we teach them must always come with action, because more than the sermons and words that we impart on them, they learn the lesson faster through actions. Like what people say, actions do really speak louder than words. You can tell your kid no don’t do this — but if he sees you doing otherwise, he would get puzzled and start thinking, if daddy can do it, why can’t I? So, we should always try to watch our actions whenever we are around our kids. Because youngsters love mimicking adults. Let’s say you are teaching him his first sport, or going around places where a construction site is nearby and he sees people wearing hard hats. Try to explain to him what the function of wearing a hard hat is, and how important is it that we take care of our heads.
Don’t be afraid to tell your little one how unsafe and dangerous it is if one’s head gets injured or so, but in the lightest possible manner that he can absorb and will not be something traumatic for his age. For example show him videos of players wearing MSA hard hats while playing softball or baseball, or show him people wearing helmets and all other protective gears while riding their bicycles and motorcycles, same with those other sports that involves the need to wear protective gears. Show him that it’s not only the head, but every part of the body that should be protected from harm and injury at all times.
You can even buy him his own protection gears. Let’s say for example, you are planning to teach him how to ride his very first bike, or how to skate. You can equip your little one with protection clothing and gears from the knee and elbow pads to the head protection gear, but it is important for him to see you also wearing one. Or if you and your wife would like to take him to watch a baseball league, you can also buy him sporty Jackson hard hats similar to what those players use, and teach him how to wear it properly. Explain to him why they are wearing it and how he could also play good like them someday, and safe.
