What Is Your Concept Of Education?

Education is an instrument in helping our country become progressive. The state of our country’s economy today tells a lot about the quality of our educational system. We’d like to believe that the problem lies in the budget, infrastructure, teachers, parents, and society. But the real problem lies in our rotting educational system. Many educators do not exactly know why they are in the profession. Teaching, to them becomes a means to an end — to survive.

There are those who are power-hungry and view teaching as a position to lord over their fellow teachers and unsuspecting students. They use their influence to make them stay in power and keep a tight hand on the neck of others, even their administrators. They must have a say in decisions concerning school, otherwise they would hold rallies and use the Magna Carta as their shield. Some don’t care whether their students learn as long as they get their monthly salary and allowances.

These shocking realities exist in many schools. We are aware of them but refuse to do something about it. Administrators ans superiors dare not question for fear of going against a system that has already taken roots. But at whose expense??? The students of course! and their parents who are working too hard just to send their kids to school to get a good education.

Today’s curriculum integrates values in the subjects. It implies that our society recognizes the vital role the school plays in propagating positive values to the students. Values are caught, not taught. Hence, the importance of seeing these values lived by the teachers. It is therefore, a must that educators practice what they teach, for they cannot give what they don’t have. They must understand their roles and impact upon society and family, so the efforts in improving the quality of education in this country won’t be in vain.
