Helping Your Kids Cope With Fear
Kids have so many fears because they do not know much about anything, or they are afraid to try new things. Sometimes they are scared of ghosts and other make believe creatures, and are afraid to be alone. These fears should be dealt with as early as possible, because they have psychological effects on a child that they could carry with them until tthey are adults. Some even develop from simple fears into serious phobia.
Encourage your kids to talk to you about their fears. If there is any specific reason why they are afraid, let them talk it out and discuss it, and tell them the reasons why there is no need to fear such. Point out there strengths and show them that you trust them to do things right, so they won’t be afraid to try something new, or to accept challenges.
Help develop their inter-personal skills by getting them involved in sports and other activities where they can interact with otehr people or compete. Make them feel that they are not alone. If they face any scary situation, make them feel that you always there to support them, and most of all, God is always there to protect them.
Lastly, try not to scare them with make believe creatures, stories, and other scary things that they end up having nightmares of. Instead, read them Bible stories, and other inspirational stories where they can get valuable life lessons from.
