Raising a kid who loves to read and learn

Raising a kid who loves to read and learn more than spend his time playing is a bliss. My son turned out to be a well-mannered and intelligent kid who love books. I give credit to my mom, abuela, and most especially Dee. They have done a great job in raising Iñigo.

Dee managed to take care of him and his needs, even if we were both busy with school for the past four years. Though Iñigo would rather read, write, and play with his educational toys, we make sure that there is balance in his daily activities. We also make him play with the usual games that kids are fond of, we let him interact with kids his age and play with them, and he has a new gaming toy that my cousins Mark and Rachel gave him. I also take time to play with him and bring him to the park.

Iñigo has grown a lot, kids do grow faster these days, it probably has something to do with their vitamins. Our baby boy is ready for nursery  school, but instead of enrolling him in a formal nursery school, my mom has decided to give him lessons during the morning, Dee will just continue to teach him during afternoon, and he will have reading time before going to bed. Just a little change from his studying routine this summer, so it would somehow feel like going to school. We will just bring him to play with other kids his age in the weekend’s play school. We believe that even if a kid can’t go to nursery school, he can still acquire a good quality education through homeschooling.

For some reason, tuition fees in nursery are much higher than that of high school, isn’t that crazy? But then again, maybe not, because it is the most crucial period of learning for kids, and giving them quality education during the early years of their lives, would give them a strong learning foundation. But, I would rather reserve the money for next year when he goes to kinder.

Anyway, we just spent the money buying him some clothing for boys which we made him happy, because he had the luxury to choose what he liked with the help of his mom. My Aunt Alona and cousins adore him so much because he’s an intelligent little boy. They have bought him educational toys and children’s books that would help nurture his learning. The toddler books that my Aunt sent us before really helped Dee in teaching Iñigo how to read, write, and recognize things at an early age. It also made him even more interested to learn. I think reading him stories before bedtime and making him watch educational programs has also something to do with his fast learning progress.

Even with homeschooling for another year, Iñigo’s quite ready for kinder. I think we will just continue to teach him so he won’t be left behind by other kids. Although I think he is more advanced that most kids his age. At four, my son can read and write, and he’s already good at basic math. He also enjoy hanging around with my siblings who give him informal lessons when it comes to playing both the piano and the ukelele. His learning level is that of first grade, and we’re very happy about it. But for now, we just want him to enjoy being a kid, and next year he can start going to formal school.

You are really blessed to have your son growing up like that. Reading and writing at four years old is really advanced.
