Owning A Pet

Owning a pet didn’t come easy for us. We had to consider so many things, the most important of which is my little brother’s health. So, for how many years we got contented with pets that we can’t really play with such as fishes and birds. My younger brother JR was sickly when we were young, that’s why we never had a pet coz mom was scared that it might not be good for him. It was only when he was well and the doctor said that it was okay and that we could start considering getting one.

Our first was a bunny, his name was  Snowby beacause he was as white as a snowball when he curls. But poor Snowby didn’t last long , he got sick and then he died. Jr and Miko cried a lot when we lost our bunny. My mom decided not to get a new pet aside from the fishes that we’ve had. There were too many fishes and we had a huge aquarium, no one weep over those fishes that died anyway.  We just removed them, changed the water in the aquarium, put back all the other fishes and try to maintain it.

It was only when Paolo was already  5 years old that our Abuelo Tacio gave us a pet dog. His name was Jack, a black Labrador retriever. We loved Jack so much and he wasn’t just a pet but he was like family and friend to us. Jack was a very playful dog, and he goes with us wherever we go, even to the beach, except when we have to travel really far and it’s not possible to bring him along. Taking care of Jack was easy, we just give him a bath, feed him and keep him clean. He became really big and fat. But just like our bunny after almost 6 years of making us happy, Jack went to sleep and never woke up again. We missed Jack so much and we were all sad… This time, Amari and Pao were the most affected of Jack’s loss. So we all gave up having a pet dog for awhile.

One day JR came home with not just one but two dogs, Balbon was about 4 months old  and the one month old puppy Tikoy.  He said his close friend was leaving and they wont be able to bring the dogs along. Being such a pet lover and kind hearted person, JR promised to adopt them. They have funny names because they already got used to it and even if we tried calling them in another name, they wont listen. So we got stuck with Balbon and Tikoy.

Then came another pet that JR adopted and brought home. A black kitten this time, a pusang kalye or maybe I should say kuting kalye coz he was just a tiny kitten who can hardly open his eyes. We figured he was just a week old or so, we still had to feed him thru a baby bottle that dad made especially for him. JR suggested that we name him Bob, after the writer Bob Ong. Balbon, and Tikoy didn’t find it hard to get along with the little kitten and they didn’t hurt Bob at all.

Now, we all understand that pets may last for a few years but they don’t last forever. We are concerned with Iñigo because he is still young and for sure he will get sad if we lose any of our pets. So if you are thinking of Owning a pet, be sure you are ready, not only emotionally but also financially, because you need to feed them right, groom them, give them time, play with them… and most of all treat them like family.

awww, well pets make a big difference int this world. sabi nga nila, when you are depressed, sometimes it’s better to have a pet than to have people around you who have the tendency to judge you. They said that having pets actually help in lowering the risks of having a heart attack. :)
