Young Voices – The Essence of Youth In The Eyes of Angela

I was reading through some old family oriented magazines and browsed through the columns when I found this interesting page entitled Young Voices. Exactly 14 years ago, five young students ranging from high school freshmen to college freshmen were asked what is The Essence of Youth for them. I wonder if they still have the same opinion now that they are 14 years older. One of them was Angela A. Manalo who was a high school sophomore then.

Angela said, “There are people who see things as they are and ask why. But there are also people who dream of things which never were and ask why not?
For me, this is the youth, the youth in Jose Rizal’s dream — filled with adventure, enthusiasm, dreams and idealism. The role of the youth is to give hope for progress in our nation and fulfill our national hero’s dream.
The essence of youth is to be a son or daughter, to love his or her parents, and be a friend. As a student and a young person has to learn ways to enable him or her to serve God and country.”

I’m so impressed with this answer coming from someone who was probably 14 years old at that time when she was asked. I’ve been tryiong to find Angela on the net, the nearest and most possible result was “Angela Adil Manalo who got 87.00% average in the 2002 Philippine BS Accountancy (CPA) Board Exam, she was part of the top 20 board passers, placing no. 16. Wow! If she is the same Angela, I must say, she has turned out into a fine lady who is now a certified public accountant (CPA).

If I will have a chance to meet or talk to Angela right now, I want to ask her the same question, “what is the essence of youth?” comparing 14 years ago from today. Angela is probably 28 years old now. :)
