Abuelo Tacio

Abuelo Tacio or Lolo Tacio as we fondly call him was a great man. He wasn’t a man of so much words, rather a man of actions and good deed. Our childhood would be less perfect without him because he taught us so many things.

Paolo, was our Abuelo’s pet. He was the one who inherited his talents both in music and arts. Although he spent more time with Paolo, he loved us all so much. It just so happened that during those times, Paolo and Amari were the only ones who were always home because JR, Miko and I, were already going to school during those times.

Abuelo was very fond of little Amari too. The three of them (Abuelo, Amari, and Paolo) hang out a lot together. He even plays musical instruments for them, tell them stories, and many more. They usually stay at the little cottage house by the garden. Abuelo spent his last years in our house because they needed to let go of the ancestral home in Tagaytay. It pained him so much but he accepted the fact that some things had to go for a much better purpose. He never regret having to leave the ancestral home, because he said he was happiest spending his time with the whole family.

Abuelo tells us stories before bedtime, he makes up for the time that he wasn’t able to spend with us during the day. Some stories are too scary, like those about mambabarang, aswang , wakwak, sigbin, etc. We all end up sleeping in one bed snuggling to each other. But we like those stories about the elementals like Pixies, Fairies, the good white Dwarf, the good Agta, Elves, etc. He was also the one who taught us to play the guitar, although Pao2x was the one with the true talent like that of Abuelo.

We got so sad when Abuelo got very Ill just a couple of years after my Uncle Luis (the younger and only brother of my dad) died. Uncle Luis died of brain cancer. Abuelo had a heart attack with complications because he was also hypertensive and he suffered kidney failure towards the end. Whenever I see devices like that of Philips Heartstart Onsite gadgets, it reminds me of him. Abuelo was the opposite of Abuela who is very health conscious, because Abuelo Tacio had a very luxurious lifestyle. He does what he want, eats what he want, and live life to the fullest. He loves wine and great food! But the good thing about Abuelo is that he never smoked. He was aware that it was not only detrimental to ones health but also for the people around, so he never tried at all.

Abuela said that during their younger days, Abuelo Tacio was very active. He was a tennis player during his college years and even when he was working already. But as far as I could recall, ever since I was small he did so many great paintings yet he never sold them. He gave them out as gifts to friends, colleagues, relatives. He was also a man of great music. He can play the piano, the violin, the guitar, the saxophone and Ukelele. I’m not quite sure what other instruments he play because those are the only instruments I’ve seen him play. But Abuela says that Abuelo can also play other instruments.

Gardening is something that both Abuela and Abuelo enjoy doing. At our ancestral home, the garden was so beautiful. Abuela and Abuelo took care of it eversince he  retired from his work.

Abuelo used to tell us about their love story, how he met Abuela, and how they fell inlove. He said it was Destiny, Her name is Anna and his is Anastacio. When we were young, I never really paid much attention to those stories, but when I fell inlove, I began to treasure the stories that Abuelo used to share. He told us that one day we will meet that one person that we would want to share the rest of our lives with, just like how he found Abuela. I already found mine… JR said he has also found his, Miko is a little too young to say that the girl he is inlove with right now is the one, but she is doing him a lot of good, so maybe he’s right. With Pao.. he has a long way to go… While our little princess Amari — Whoever would try will definitely have to pass the test of the pack.  :P

Abuelo Tacio will always remain in our hearts forever and the lessons and wisdom he has endowed us with will never be erased.
