Prostate Cancer Symptoms, Prostatism, and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

‘Prostate Cancer Symptoms’ and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). What is the difference between  a simple case of Prostatism and ‘Prostate Cancer’?

I have not met a single person who asked me this kind of question yet. Many people take Cancer for granted until they are stricken by the disease or see someone in their family suffer and die due to cancer. It is about time that we educate ourselves about cancer, and know what we can do to prevent it. Cancer Kills! I know so, because someone in our family died of Cancer. Read: “Care is Possible even when Cure is Not”

The first culprit on the list is Prostate Cancer. This is the type of cancer that only men are affected, and most of those who suffer from prostate enlargement, which is one of the cancer symptoms or what they commonly call as prostate symptoms, are men on their 50′s and older.  So if you are around this age range, you are likely to become one of the victims.

But why? Why us? Why only men are affected? It’s unfair! Women should be affected too! – Hello! If you were sane enough, you would not even bother to ask this silly question. Only men have prostate as only women has ovaries. Clear? But at least if you know a woman who is affected by this disease, you know that she is not really a she but a “he” :)

Most of those who suffer from ‘enlarged prostate’ are men on their 50′s and older. But just because you are young, it does not mean that you should care less. Time passes by really fast, and before you know it, you are in that age range and a possible victim of this dreaded disease. And what about your dad, your grandpa, are you sure they are safe?

Although only 1 in 10,000 under age 40 will be diagnosed, the rate shoots up to 1 in 38 for ages 40 to 59, and 1 in 15 for ages 60 to 69. In fact, more than 65% of all prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over the age of 65.

‘Prostate Cancer’ just like any other cancer is not just a burden to those who are affected by the disease, but also a problem of those family whose family member has cancer. That is why not only men should be aware, but also women, most especially wives, who has the biggest influence to their husband, and can encourage their husbands to have a regular check-up once you see signs and symptoms on them, that they may be ignoring.

The prostate is a part of the male sex organ which is located at the root of the penis  just below the urinary bladder, it’s like this little sack attached or hugging the urethra. The urethra is a tube that conducts urine from the bladder to the outside. And because it cannot be seen from the outside, doctors do a little icky trick to do this. Guess what? The doctors examine the prostate by inserting a finger in the anus and palpate it. I know that could be a little uncomfortable.  If you got to watch a certain episode in family guy where Peter Griffin had his prostate examined, he felt like he was raped. Don’t be ridiculous like him. The doctor is simply trying to examine your prostate. Hmm just imagine those men who go through ‘prostate cancer therapy’ and those who have to go through ‘prostate cancer surgery’. I’m sure that hurts a whole lot more and feel very uncomfortable. So a simple examination would not really hurt.
Wait up! What is the prostate for and why is it so freaky that it kills men? Can we kill it before it kills us? What does it do, and how does it functions anyway?
I knew you were gonna ask that! Aside from aiding urination, the prostate is responsible for the secretions necessary for lubrication during the sexual act and also provides the proper substances for the sperms to survive. So now what? Are you still interested in killing your prostate? Your prostate is your friend, Prostate Cancer is the enemy!
A man in his middle 50′s has some difficulty urinating even if he has the urge to urinate, it takes him a long time to do so, and associated with a little pain. Could it be that there is something wrong with his prostate?
Symptoms of Prostate Cancer includes but are not limited to painful and difficulty in urinating, problems during sexual intercourse, erectile dysfunction. Other symptoms can potentially develop during later stages of the disease.

The man may be suffering from prostatism. This means that he most likely have an enlarged prostate.  Men approaching old age usually suffer from enlargement of this organ. The state wherein the prostate is enlarged is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The initial symptoms are those of difficulty urinating. Oftentimes, urination is not complete so urine remains in the bladder and this becomes the focus of infection leading to urinary track infection. For more severe cases, there can be complete obstruction so that there will be no urine output and the bladder becomes very distended.
What patients should do is have their doctor assess the size and consistency of their prostate by going through the rectal exam. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) usually presents as enlarged and rubbery in consistency. A very hard consistency or a specific mass palpated may be suggestive of cancerous origin.
Treatment consists of medical and surgical. For emergency treatment of the urinary obstruction, a urinary catheter is inserted to drain the urine properly. There are oral tablets available once a diagnosis of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is made. If a tumor is not totally ruled out, or the prostate is very large, then ‘prostate surgery’ is needed. The surgery is performed by specialists surgeon called urologists. The procedure is called Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP). An instrument is inserted to the urethra and the prostate is gradually scraped off to relieve the obstruction and to get samples for prostate biopsy or laboratory examination.

If the prostate cancer biopsy results shows that the specimen taken from the prostate is cancerous, the urologist will then determine the stage of the Prostate cancer and the possible medications. Once cancer develops in the prostate, the cells of the prostate could mutate and begin to grown in numbers uncontrollably. Not only that, the cancer cells may metastasize from the prostate to other parts of the body, and eventually spread until it reaches the stage that is become impossible to get cured.

Cancer cells usually metastasize to  the bones and lymph nodes. Some patients go through surgery to remove the cancerous cells, then go through chemotherapy. But there is so little chance of surviving when Cancer is already in its late stages. Chemotherapy is not an assurance that the patient will survive at this stage, it can only prolong a patient’s life, but not totally cure.

So it is better to detect cancer during its early stage when it is still curable. Millions of men died and are about to die because of Prostate Cancer. Who knows the person next to you could be one of them, or maybe you will be the next victim! Remember, just because you don’t suffer from the symptoms, it doesn’t mean that you are safe. There are those who just notice the prostate symptoms late, only to find out that they have an ‘aggressive prostate cancer’ type.

Refuse to be a cancer victim, act, educate yourself, know more about cancer, check out the prostate cancer wiki or participate in   prostate cancer forum and spread the word, let us all fight cancer!  Have a regular check-up, detoxify your body, Live a healthy lifestyle!
