Books and Memories

When I was still studying, I didn’t have the luxury to buy all the books that I want to buy, even those that I need for my course. My salary is above average compared to other regular-waged Filipino workers, but having to send someone to school aside from myself, and with other more important priorities such as buying the kid’s needs such as milk and diapers, my income was just enough to survive for the whole month until the next pay day.

To be honest, buying books was not even on the top 10 of my priority list. But my dad always say that no matter how expensive a book is, if I want to get a good education, I shouldn’t regret buying one because books are necessary if I want to learn. Even when a person is no longer studying, books help nurture learning.

During my college days, whenever we’re instructed to buy textbooks, I always have second thoughts whether I will comply or not, and most of the time I end up having photocopied materials instead. When I pass by a bookstore and see a college text books for sale sign, I check on the price and then start weighing things before I decide if I should buy one or just borrow, or which specific book is necessary to have. Most of the time, it’s Dee who buy the books for me instead, because she knows that if I were to decide, I would most probably go for borrowing or sharing books with classmates and friends.

Whenever I’m at home and I see my books, I always remember how I acquired each one of them. Some were gifts, some were bought by my dad and Dee, and so few of them I bought for myself. But there’s only one thing in common between all of them, those books helped me pass all my subjects and graduate in college. :) Now, it’s my turn to buy books for my son, who loves to read just like his mom.

i think the best investments my parents made apart from getting through school are the 2 sets of encyclopaedias that i still have in my bedroom. they’re outdated but they have given me so much to learn from.

ako rin, ung mga college textbooks ko puro hiram lang. hehehe. poor kami eh.

pero ngayong may trabaho na ko, i make it a point to buy a book at least every after two weeks or so.

books may be expensive. but the wisdom you gain from reading them? it’s priceless!
