Miko Alfonso aka Miko “Malcolm in the Middle”. Miko will be 16 y/o this April, he is now on his junior year in High School.  We used to call him “Miko in the Middle” because he’s the middle child. They say middle children are either the witty and well behaved ones, and some say they are the most problematic ones. The Middle Child Syndrome as they call it.

Well, Miko is both. He is really witty, he excels in class, in fact he has been consistent best in Math and Best in Science since grade school, but he never bagged first honors because  he also gets in trouble a lot.  He easily picks a fight with people, because whether right or wrong Miko would stand up for what he believes in. He’s not scared to speak out and express himself.  Even his teachers complained about his attitude, because he is not afraid to tell his teachers that they are wrong. He never had that sense of being calm and relaxed like my other sibling JR, or the innocent playfulness and sweetness of Amari, rather he is more like Bob :P JK!

He mellowed down lately though, maybe it’s because he has a girlfriend now, and has become more active in church where his girlfriend is a member of the chorale. My dad used to be against my younger brothers to be in a relationship too young because they might end up like me. I got my wife Andrea pregnant when we were 17. But with Miko’s development and improving social skills, Dad seems to be happy with it. He actually think that the girl is a good influence for Miko.

Miko is the one who was really jealous when we were young. He has gotten over it though when he realized that Paolo wasn’t a competition. When Paolo was born, Miko felt as if he was left out and he treated Paolo like a competition. When Paolo has a new toy, he has to have one too otherwise he would have tantrums and would keep on saying it’s unfair! it’s unfair! He felt that we all loved him less even if it wasn’t true. Good thing mom and dad were good at explaining that he was already big brother an Paolo was baby brother who needed us to take care of him. Miko had this “but I am baby” attitude. We couldn’t blame him, he was too young to understand. Anyway, after maybe a couple of years he has learned to be completely at ease with Paolo, and he played big bro who took care at looked after Paolo. He even had fights with those kids who say Pao is “Lampa” (weakling).

They’ve been best of buddies since then and they go to the same school together with JR before. The Middle Child Syndrome still manifest at certain times but overall, Miko is perfectly alright. He is targetting to finish his junior year as Top 2 in his class, but he promised dad that he will change and try to bag the First Honors on his senior year so he will have a scholarship for college. He’s planning to study an the University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus. I have nothing but love and well wishes for my little brother who is not so little at all. :) I am so proud of him, and I would say, he is the most intelligent among us all. I salute you bro! Keep up the good job, and keep changing for the better!
